Purity Ring formed in 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, comprising multi-instrumentalist and producer Corin Roddick and vocalist and lyricist Megan James. Their collaboration began when Roddick, while touring with their previous band Gobble Gobble, experimented with electronic production and invited James to contribute vocals to a track titled “Ungirthed,” which was officially released in January 2011. This initial venture laid the foundation for their unique musical style, blending electronic elements with James’ distinctive vocal delivery and lyrical themes. The duo quickly gained recognition, leading to their signing with 4AD worldwide and Last Gang Records in Canada in April 2012, marking a significant step in their professional career. Their debut album, “Shrines,” released in July 2012, was met with critical acclaim and achieved commercial success, peaking at number 32 on the Billboard 200 and selling 90,000 copies in the US by February 2015. The album was also shortlisted for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize.
Following the success of “Shrines,” Purity Ring continued to develop their sound. They released their second studio album, “Another Eternity,” in March 2015, which charted at number 25 on the Canadian Albums Chart and number 26 on the Billboard 200. This album marked a shift in their creative process, as it was the first time Roddick and James recorded entirely in the studio together, fostering a more integrated and collaborative approach to their music. Over the years, Purity Ring has engaged in various projects and partnerships, including collaborating with rapper Danny Brown on his album and contributing to Katy Perry’s album “Witness” in 2017 by co-writing and producing three songs. These collaborations demonstrate their versatility and appeal across different musical landscapes.
The band released their third album, “Womb,” in April 2020, further expanding on their signature electro-pop sound. In June 2022, they released the “Graves” EP, consisting of seven songs, and celebrated the tenth anniversary of “Shrines” with a reissue titled “Shrines X,” featuring unreleased B-sides. Looking forward, Purity Ring is set to release a self-titled album in September 2025, inspired by video games like “Final Fantasy X” and “NieR: Automata,” aiming to create an immersive, role-playing game-like musical experience. This progression highlights their continuous innovation and exploration within the electronic music genre, maintaining a consistent output of new material and touring schedules, including their announced North American tour for autumn 2025.
