Gus Gus

GusGus is an electronic music band originating from Reykjavík, Iceland, formed in 1995. The group initially started as a film and acting collective before transitioning into a prominent electronic music act. Their name is derived from the 1974 German film “Ali: Fear Eats the Soul,” where a character mispronounces “couscous” as “Gusgus.” The band’s musical style is eclectic, encompassing techno, trip hop, house music, downtempo, and ambient genres, reflecting their experimental approach to electronic sound.

Over the years, GusGus has featured a fluctuating lineup of members, including Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson, Emilíana Torrini Davíðsdóttir, and Birgir Þórarinsson, among others. In 1997, they gained international recognition while supporting their album “Polydistortion” with performances in Toronto. The band’s third album, “This Is Normal,” released in 1999, saw the filmmaking component of GusGus branch off to form the production company Celebrator, later known as Arni & Kinski, which has since produced advertisements and videos. By 2011, GusGus had achieved significant commercial success, selling over 700,000 copies of their music worldwide.

GusGus has released twelve studio albums, including “Polydistortion” (1997), “This Is Normal” (1999), “Attention” (2002), “Arabian Horse” (2011), and “Mobile Home” (2021). Their music has been featured in various media, including a remix of their track “Purple” on Paul Oakenfold’s “Tranceport” compilation (1998), “Anthem” in the film “Pi” (1998), and “Ladyshave” in a Mitsubishi Eclipse commercial. The band has also remixed tracks for artists such as Björk, Depeche Mode, Moloko, and Sigur Rós, further cementing their influence and versatility within the electronic music landscape. Their continued evolution led to collaborations such as “Higher” featuring VÖK (2020) and “Love is Alone” featuring John Grant (2021).
