Jazzie B

Jazzie B, founder of Soul II Soul, transitioned from a London sound system operator to a globally recognized DJ and music producer, influencing black British music and culture. After solidifying Soul II Soul’s influential presence with their seminal nights at the Africa Centre in Covent Garden from 1985 to 1989, Jazzie B went on to shape black British music and culture. This pivotal period, during which Soul II Soul had adopted its working name in 1982, embraced their motto ‘A smilin’ face and a pumpin’ bass for a lovin’ race’ and led to the recording of their breakthrough track ‘Fairplay,’ marking a significant turning point in their career and garnering wider public recognition. Jazzie B’s career expanded significantly beyond Soul II Soul, establishing him as a prominent DJ, producer, and cultural icon.

Most recently, in February 2024, Jazzie B was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 26th annual Mobo Awards, acknowledging his more than four decades of continuous influence in the music industry. This recognition further cements his legacy as a trailblazer and enduring force in global music and culture.
