DJ Slugo is the ghetto house pioneer, born deep in the heart of Southside Chicago. Influenced by his cousin DJ Geno, a local Chicago favourite, and a host of other Chi town icons like the DJs from Hot Mix radio, Slugo came from humble beginnings and he now has over twenty years in the game and has released over twenty albums. Forever known as one of the original pioneers of ghetto house, or juke, an urban dance music style derived from classic house and heavily influenced by ghetto life experiences and traditions. DJ Slugo’s ghetto house is metaphysical, infectious, rhythmic and exciting, bringing clubbers back to their dancing roots.
Slugo started DJing in high school, and eventually started entering DJ battles in the mid-1980s, winning him praise for his technical ability behind the decks. His first professional mixtape was released in 1992. Ghetto Mix Part III ended up on regular rotation of Dance Mania’s label head Ray Barney, which led to a fruitful relationship between Dance Mania and Slugo. The DJ released much of his music on the label, and eventually formed his own Subterranean Playhouse records. Slugo became prominent on the rave scene, introducing his ghetto style of mixing to many who had never heard anything like it. DJ Slugo’s Cardboard Booty mixtape became one of ghetto house’s most influential releases and cemented the DJ’s reputation as a true ghetto pioneer. DJ Slugo’s more recent projects, ‘Where the Rats’ and ‘Godzilla’ became dancefloor phenomenons and he continues to bring ghetto house music to party goers worldwide.
