About

New Order emerged in Salford, England, in 1980, formed by Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar), Peter Hook (bass), and Stephen Morris (drums), following the dissolution of their previous band, Joy Division, after the passing of lead singer Ian Curtis. Keyboardist Gillian Gilbert joined shortly thereafter. The band quickly distinguished itself by integrating elements of post-punk with electronic dance music, a fusion that would become their signature sound. This unique approach made them a highly influential act throughout the 1980s and beyond, often serving as the flagship band for Manchester’s independent record label, Factory Records, and its associated nightclub, The Haçienda. Their collaboration with graphic designer Peter Saville became an integral part of their artistic identity, resulting in iconic album cover designs.

Initially navigating the shadow of Joy Division’s post-punk legacy, New Order found a new direction after experiencing the vibrant early 1980s New York club scene. This exposure led them to incorporate more dance rhythms and electronic instrumentation into their work. A significant milestone arrived with their 1983 single “Blue Monday,” which became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time and a popular fixture in clubs worldwide. The band continued to release critically acclaimed albums throughout the decade, including “Power, Corruption & Lies” (1983) and “Technique” (1989), alongside the influential singles compilation “Substance” (1987). Their commercial and artistic success was marked by an inventive approach to music production and visual presentation.

New Order has experienced various hiatuses and personnel changes over the years. Following a break in 1993, the band reunited in 1998. Peter Hook’s departure in 2007 led to further shifts in the lineup. In 2011, Gillian Gilbert returned to the band, and Tom Chapman joined on bass. Their tenth studio album, “Music Complete,” was released in 2015. Their enduring influence was recognized in 2023 when both Joy Division and New Order were nominated as one act for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their status as a foundational presence in modern music.
