This partnership includes a mentorship program culminating in the production of an EP. He mentored three Epidemic Sound artists: The Yard Woman, Blue Saga, and dreem, who reunited in Lisbon for the project.
The collaboration with Simons and Prada began in 2021 when the brand enlisted Plastikman to compose a series of runway soundtracks.
WOMB marked its 25th anniversary with Richie Hawtin and a special sake collaboration. The techno icon was featured on the April 19 line-up alongside Machìna.
Hawtin launched 'ENTER. SAKE', a sake brand in the USA and Europe in 2014, and was awarded the title of Sake Samurai in the same year.
Richard “Richie” Hawtin was born on June 4, 1970, in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England. At the age of nine, his family relocated to LaSalle, Ontario, Canada, a suburb of Windsor, Ontario. His father, a robotics technician at General Motors, introduced him to electronic music from an early age, including artists like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Hawtin began DJing in clubs at 17, receiving mentorship from Scott “Go-Go” Gordon at The Shelter in Detroit. His early style blended house music and techno. In 1989, he co-founded the Plus 8 record label with John Acquaviva, and the label released his early tracks under the alias F.U.S.E. Hawtin later dropped out of the University of Windsor, where he was studying film, to focus on his music career. The Plus 8 label became a platform for other artists such as Speedy J and Kenny Larkin.
Hawtin adopted his “Plastikman” alias in 1993, releasing the single “Spastik” and the album *Sheet One*. He continued to release multiple albums and tour with a live show as Plastikman for over a decade. He was a key figure in the minimalist techno movement of the early 1990s, representing a “second wave” of American producers associated with Detroit techno. In 1996, he released a series of monthly 12-inch singles, Concept 1, further exploring minimal techno. In 1998, Hawtin launched M-nus Records, which advanced the careers of DJ-producers including Magda, Gaiser, Marc Houle, Hearttrob, and Troy Pierce. The *Decks, EFX & 909* mix album, released in 1999, showcased 38 tracks manipulated with effects and drum machines, initiating a series of influential mixes.
Throughout his career, Hawtin demonstrated a consistent focus on innovation and technology within electronic music. From 2012 to 2015, he hosted the ENTER. Ibiza weekly party at Space in Ibiza. In 2016, he launched PLAYdifferently, his own technology company, and released the MODEL 1 mixer, co-designed with Andy Rigby-Jones, which was adopted by notable DJs like Carl Cox and Loco Dice. Hawtin also co-founded Plus 8 Equities, a music technology fund aimed at advancing music innovation. In 2019, he introduced the CLOSER App, an interactive tool for deconstructing his live audio performances.
