Richie Hawtin

Richie Hawtin is a British-Canadian electronic musician, DJ, and record executive recognized for his pioneering contributions to minimal techno and his entrepreneurial ventures in music technology and lifestyle brands. After co-founding the influential Plus 8 record label with John Acquaviva in 1989, Richie Hawtin went on to establish himself as a pioneering force in electronic music, known for his groundbreaking contributions to minimal techno. Hawtin began his professional DJ career in clubs in 1987, receiving mentorship from Scott ‘Go-Go’ Gordon at The Shelter in Detroit, cultivating an early style blending house music and techno. Under the F.U.S.E.

His relentless pursuit of sonic exploration continued in 1996 with the release of Concept 1, a series of monthly 12-inch singles. In 1998, Hawtin launched M-nus Records, a label instrumental in advancing the careers of prominent DJ-producers including Magda, Gaiser, Marc Houle, Hearttrob, and Troy Pierce. The following year, his influential Decks, EFX & 909 mix album showcased 38 tracks masterfully manipulated with effects and drum machines, initiating a celebrated series of mixes. Hawtin consistently demonstrated a focus on innovation and technology throughout his career.

The innovative mixer was adopted by notable international DJs like Carl Cox and Loco Dice. He also co-founded Plus 8 Equities, a music technology fund dedicated to advancing innovation within the music industry. Furthering his commitment to cutting-edge interaction, Hawtin introduced the CLOSER App in 2019, an interactive tool for deconstructing his live audio performances.
