Jlin, an electronic musician and composer, has carved a distinct path from the footwork scene of Gary, Indiana, to international acclaim and collaborations across contemporary music and dance.
Jlin collaborated with GRAMMY® Award-winning percussion ensemble Third Coast Percussion for a thrilling collaboration of percussion and cutting-edge electronics, including the commissioned work "Perspectives" (2020).

Jerrilynn Patton, known as Jlin, was born on July 30, 1987, and raised in Gary, Indiana. Her early exposure to music included artists like Anita Baker and Sade, alongside the sounds of footwork. She began producing music in 2008, drawing inspiration from her mother to develop a unique sound. After briefly studying mathematics at Purdue University and working at a steel mill, Jlin’s focus shifted towards her musical endeavors. Her career gained initial traction with the track “Erotic Heat,” which, despite her hesitations about its unconventional style for footwork, was released on Planet Mu’s _Bangs & Works, Vol. 2_ compilation in 2011. This release garnered her attention and the track was later used in a 2014 Rick Owens fashion show.
Jlin’s debut album, _Dark Energy_, was released in 2015 to critical acclaim, contributing to the global popularization of footwork. This was followed by _Black Origami_ in 2017, an album that received universal acclaim and featured collaborations with artists such as William Basinski, Holly Herndon, Fawkes, and Dope Saint Jude. Also in 2017, Jlin was commissioned to compose the score for “AutoBIOgraphy” by Company Wayne McGregor, which premiered at Sadler’s Wells in London. Further expanding her compositional reach, she created “Perspectives” in 2020, commissioned by the Boulanger Initiative for Third Coast Percussion. In 2022, Jlin launched an online music course with Soundfly titled “Jlin: Rhythm, Variation, & Vulnerability,” sharing her approach to music creation.
Her dedication to experimenting with and evolving her sound led to a significant milestone in 2023 when she was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Music for her composition _Perspective_. Her latest album, _Akoma_, released in March 2024 via Planet Mu, further showcases her collaborative spirit, featuring contributions from Philip Glass, Björk, and Kronos Quartet. Jlin’s work continues to be recognized for its innovative blend of electronic music, classical influences, and a distinct rhythmic complexity, solidifying her position as a significant figure in contemporary music.
