311 is an American rock band that originated in 1988 in Omaha, Nebraska. The band was formed by vocalist and guitarist Nick Hexum, lead guitarist Jim Watson, bassist Aaron “P-Nut” Wills, and drummer Chad Sexton. Jim Watson was replaced by Tim Mahoney in 1990, and in 1992, Doug “SA” Martinez joined as a second vocalist and turntablist, completing the lasting lineup. The band’s name comes from the police code for indecent exposure in Omaha, following a friend’s arrest for skinny dipping.
After several independent releases, 311 signed with Capricorn Records in 1992, releasing “Music” in 1993 and “Grassroots” in 1994. Their self-titled album “311,” released in 1995, marked a significant commercial breakthrough, achieving triple platinum status and reaching number 12 on the Billboard 200. The singles “Down” and “All Mixed Up” contributed to this success, with “Down” topping the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks in 1996. Subsequent albums such as “Transistor” (1997), “Soundsystem” (1999), and “From Chaos” (2001) continued their success, with “Transistor” going platinum and the others achieving gold status.
Over their career, 311 has released fourteen studio albums, two live albums, four compilation albums, four EPs, and four DVDs. Their 2004 compilation album, “Greatest Hits ’93–’03,” also achieved platinum certification. By 2022, the band had sold over 10 million records in the United States. 311 is recognized for their consistent touring, establishing events like “311 Day,” an extended concert held annually or biennially since 2000, and the 311 Caribbean Cruise, a festival at sea that began in 2011.
