Adult, an innovative American band from Detroit, Michigan, was formed in 1998 by the dynamic married couple Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller. With a unique blend of vocals, drum machines, and analog synthesizers, they carved a niche in the electronic/punk genre. Both members, equipped with art degrees—Miller in painting and Kuperus in photography—infused their artistic backgrounds into their music, creating a distinctive sound that resonated with audiences. Initially releasing music under the pseudonym Plasma Co., they gained recognition with their album “Anxiety Always,” marking their transition from anonymity to a celebrated husband-and-wife duo.
Throughout their career, Adult has made significant contributions to the music scene, including remixes for notable artists like Felix da Housecat and Ladytron. Their artistic endeavors extend beyond music; Kuperus has showcased her photography in prestigious museums across the U.S. and Europe. The band also ventured into film, producing the score for “OPEN” and creating a live performance piece titled “thee Three Graces tryptic,” which was screened at various renowned venues. Their installation at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh further exemplified their interdisciplinary approach, merging audio, video, and visual art.
Despite facing the challenges of maintaining a unique identity in a competitive industry, Adult has cultivated a loyal following, particularly in Detroit, Germany, and the UK. Their ability to evolve while staying true to their artistic vision has allowed them to thrive. The addition of guitarist Samuel Consiglio, although short-lived, showcased their willingness to experiment and adapt.
With their eighth studio album, “Perception is/as/of Deception,” released in April 2020, Adult continues to push boundaries and inspire a new generation of artists. Their impact on the electronic music landscape is undeniable, as they blend art and sound in ways that challenge conventional norms, leaving a lasting legacy in both music and visual art.
