Aer

Aer was an American indie band formed by David von Mering and Carter Schultz, both hailing from Wayland, Massachusetts. The duo met in elementary school and formed their first band in high school. After that group disbanded, they continued collaborating, developing a unique musical style that combined elements of hip-hop, alternative rock, rap, reggae, and pop. This genre-blending approach characterized their sound throughout their career. Following their high school graduation from Wayland High School, von Mering and Schultz relocated to Boston to focus full-time on their music.

Aer’s career officially spanned from 2010 to 2016. In their early years, they released mixtapes such as “Water On The Moon” in 2010 and “The Reach” in May 2011, alongside their debut EP, “What You Need,” later that year. Their first studio album, “The Bright Side,” released in 2012, garnered significant attention, reaching number 85 on the US Billboard 200 chart and being certified Gold. This success was followed by their second EP, “Strangers,” in 2013, and their self-titled second album, “Aer,” released in January 2014, which climbed to number 26 on the Billboard chart. In August 2015, they released their third full-length album, “One Of A Kind,” supported by a tour across major venues including the State Theater in Portland, Maine, Best Buy Theater in New York City, and the House of Blues in Boston. Their song “Floats My Boat” achieved over 7 million views on YouTube, showcasing their ability to connect with a broad audience through their distinctive sound.

Aer built a dedicated fan base largely through their proactive use of social media and constant touring, playing over 250 shows in 2012 alone. Despite operating independently for much of their career, they managed to attract a substantial following, including nearly 60,000 Facebook fans by 2013. In 2016, Schultz and von Mering mutually decided to conclude Aer. They both continued their involvement in music separately. Schultz later launched a solo project under the name Carter Reeves and subsequently formed the band Surfer Girl, embracing a more indie-pop and surf-rock sound. Von Mering transitioned into production and songwriting, contributing to tracks for artists such as Quinn XCII, DVBBS, Surfaces, and Forrest Frank.
