Ansel Elgort was born on March 14, 1994, in New York City. His father, Arthur Elgort, is a fashion photographer, and his mother, Grethe Holby, is an opera director. Elgort’s early artistic interests led him to audition for the School of American Ballet at age nine, where he studied for five years. He also attended Stagedoor Manor summer camp and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, where he engaged in acting classes and school productions. His professional acting career began with an Off-Broadway play, “Regrets,” in March 2012, shortly after his 18th birthday.
Elgort made his film debut in the horror remake “Carrie” (2013). He gained broader recognition for his roles in “Divergent” (2014) as Caleb Prior and, notably, as Augustus Waters in the romantic drama “The Fault in Our Stars” (2014), where he co-starred with Shailene Woodley. He reprised his role as Caleb Prior in “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” (2015) and “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” (2016). In 2017, Elgort starred in Edgar Wright’s action thriller “Baby Driver” as the title character, a role for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. He continued to take on diverse roles, including in the book adaptation “November Criminals” (2017) and “Billionaire Boys Club” (2018).
His career further expanded with lead roles in “The Goldfinch” (2019) and Steven Spielberg’s musical film “West Side Story” (2021). For the latter, Elgort played Tony, showcasing his vocal talents. Beyond acting, Elgort has an established musical career, performing under the name Ansølo as an electronic dance music DJ and as Ansel Elgort for his vocal singles. He signed a record deal with Island/Universal Records in 2015 and has released several tracks, including “Unite” (2014), “Thief” (2017), and “Supernova” (2018). Most recently, he starred as Jake Adelstein in the crime series “Tokyo Vice” (2022–2024), where he also served as an executive producer.
