Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona on May 28, 1994, Alec Benjamin began writing songs at the age of 13 and later learned to play the guitar during high school. His early career saw the release of his first EP, “America,” in 2013. While a student at the University of Southern California, Benjamin independently recorded his debut single, “Paper Crown,” in his dorm room in 2016. That same year, he released additional tracks such as “The Water Fountain,” “End of the Summer,” and “I Built a Friend,” characterized by his distinctive youthful vocals and keyboard-centric arrangements. A significant early collaboration was his co-writing credit on Jon Bellion’s song “New York Soul, Pt. 2,” featured on the album, “The Human Condition” also in 2016.
