Alexi Murdoch

Alexi Murdoch was born in London on December 27, 1973, to an English mother, singer Louise Cordet, and a Greek father. He spent his early childhood in Greece until the age of ten, when his family relocated to Scotland. In 1992, Murdoch moved to the United States to attend Duke University, later settling in Los Angeles, California. His musical journey began to gain traction when Nic Harcourt featured his music on KCRW, leading to increased public interest.

Despite receiving numerous offers from record labels, Murdoch chose to maintain creative control by releasing his music independently. He self-released his EP, “Four Songs,” in November 2002 through independent record stores and CD Baby. This release achieved significant success, selling over 50,000 copies and becoming CD Baby’s all-time best-selling record. The song “Orange Sky” from this EP gained considerable airplay, becoming the most-played song on Philadelphia indie station WXPN in 2004. He further showcased his talent at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Conference and the Sundance Film Festival in 2003, and the Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film & TV Music Conference in 2004.

Murdoch’s debut album, “Time Without Consequence,” was released on June 6, 2006, on his own Zero Summer label. This album garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning five stars with Alternative Press and securing a spot on Rolling Stone’s Top Ten Artists list. It peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The album became one of the most licensed of the decade, with tracks like “Orange Sky” and “All My Days” featuring in numerous television shows such as “The O.C.,” “House,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and films like “Ladder 49” and “Real Steel.” Nine of his songs, including previously unreleased tracks, were prominently featured in the 2009 film “Away We Go.” His second album, “Towards the Sun,” was initially released in the US in 2009 and later in the UK and Germany in 2011 through City Slang, also receiving high praise for its “hauntingly beautiful” and “heartbreakingly lovely” sound.
