Alexisonfire formed in St. Catharines, Ontario, in late 2001, following the breakup of three local bands. The initial lineup included Dallas Green (vocals, rhythm guitar), Wade MacNeil (lead guitar, vocals), George Pettit (vocals), Chris Steele (bass), and Jesse Ingelevics (drums). Their self-titled debut album was released on October 31, 2002, through Distort Entertainment, featuring the breakthrough single “Pulmonary Archery.” This album achieved Gold certification in Canada by October 2005. The band gained early recognition, winning Best Video at the 2004 Canadian Independent Music Awards for “Pulmonary Archery” and being named Favourite Indie Band at the CASBY Awards.
Their second album, “Watch Out!”, recorded with Julius Butty, was released on June 29, 2004. This album quickly achieved commercial success, debuting at No. 6 on the Nielsen Soundscan Top 200, selling 6,000 copies in its first week, and reaching Gold certification in Canada within twelve weeks, followed by Platinum in 2007. In June 2005, Jesse Ingelevics departed and was replaced by Jordan Hastings. The band continued to tour extensively across North America, the UK, Europe, and Japan, playing at festivals like Warped Tour and Reading and Leeds. “Watch Out!” earned them the Best Independent Video award at the MuchMusic Video Awards for “Accidents” and the New Group of the Year award at the 2005 Juno Awards.
The band’s third album, “Crisis,” released on August 22, 2006, debuted at No. 1 on the Canadian Albums Chart and solidified their international standing. This release led to a ten-month world tour, including performances at major festivals and headlining shows at venues like Brixton Academy. “Crisis” won Favorite New Indie Release at the 2006 CASBY Awards. After a hiatus and a farewell tour in 2012, Alexisonfire officially reformed in 2015. They released “Otherness” in 2022, their first full-length album in 13 years, which won the Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year in 2023. The band continues to record and tour, with a covers EP, “Copies of Old Masters, Vol. 1,” set for release in November 2025, and a new album in the works for 2026.
