Kano is a versatile artist recognized for his contributions to music, particularly grime, and his acting roles in television and film. After establishing himself as a pivotal member of the prominent grime collective Nasty Crew in 2002, Kano swiftly made his mark on the music scene. His second vinyl release, ‘Vice Versa (Boys Love Girls),’ released through Jammer’s label, Jahmek the World, gained early traction. Kano further expanded his reach through appearances on official remixes, including The Streets’ ‘Fit but You Know It,’ and on Jammer’s Lord of the Mics grime battle DVD.
Alongside his burgeoning acting career, he maintained a strong presence in music, releasing the music video for ‘Flow of the Year’ featuring JME via SB.TV in 2014, and the single ‘Hail’ with its B-side ‘New Banger’ in 2015. His fifth album, Made in the Manor, released in 2016, was widely praised, earning a shortlist nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize and winning Best Album at the MOBO Awards that same year. Kano reprised his pivotal role as Sully when Netflix revived Top Boy in 2019, garnering significant acclaim. That same year, he released his sixth album, Hoodies All Summer, which was also shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2020.
His impactful performance in Top Boy earned him the MOBO Award for Best Performance in a TV Show/Film in 2022. Most recently, Kano took on the lead role in the 2023 Netflix film The Kitchen, further solidifying his status as a versatile and compelling talent across both music and screen. He was also recognized as one of ‘London’s Heroes of 2005’ by Mayor Ken Livingstone.
