Algebra Felicia Blessett, born on April 9, 1976, in Atlanta, Georgia, was immersed in music from an early age. Her mother, a gospel singer and bass player, exposed her to soul, gospel, and R&B, which shaped her musical foundation. Although she sang in a gospel choir during her school years, she initially pursued it as an extracurricular activity rather than a deep passion. This early exposure to diverse genres laid the groundwork for her future in music.
Blessett began her professional career providing background vocals for notable R&B artists like Monica and Bilal. This experience led to a contract with Rowdy Records in Atlanta. She further expanded her experience through touring with Anthony Hamilton and collaborating with India.Arie. Later, she learned to play the guitar, enabling her to perform her own material in the Atlanta club circuit and develop her songwriting skills. Her debut single, “U Do It For Me,” was released in 2006 under the Kedar Entertainment label, followed by her first album, “Purpose,” in 2008.
Her career continued to progress with the release of her sophomore album, “Recovery,” in 2014. “Purpose” spent 14 weeks on the US Billboard R&B chart, peaking at No. 56, and reached No. 37 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. “Recovery” marked her debut on the Billboard 200 at No. 149 and also achieved No. 2 on Heatseekers Albums and No. 23 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. These chart performances illustrate her consistent reach and recognition within the R&B and neo-soul genres.
