Anthony John Medeski was born on June 28, 1965, in Louisville, Kentucky, and spent his formative years in Florida. He began his piano studies at the age of five, developing a strong foundation that would later lead him to perform with notable musicians such as Mark Murphy and Jaco Pastorius during his teenage years. In 1983, after completing high school, Medeski enrolled at the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he further honed his skills. During his time there, he gained experience as a sideman, collaborating with esteemed artists including Dewey Redman, Billy Higgins, Bob Mintzer, and Alan Dawson. His early interest in improvised music and jazz was significantly influenced by listening to Oscar Peterson.
Medeski is widely recognized for his versatility across musical genres, ranging from accessible groove-based funk and jazz to more experimental compositions. He is best known as a member of Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW), a trio he co-founded in New York in 1991 with drummer Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood. The band established its presence by performing at The Village Gate. Throughout the mid-1990s, MMW consistently toured on both national and international funk, jazz, and jam music circuits. His collaborative efforts extend to various figures in the music industry, including John Scofield, with whom he released the album “A Go Go,” and avant-garde icon John Zorn, contributing to projects such as “Duras: Duchamp” and “Nova Express.”
Beyond MMW, Medeski has engaged in numerous other significant musical endeavors. In 2000, he became part of The Word, a bluesy gospel project alongside Robert Randolph, Luther Dickinson, Cody Dickinson, and Chris Chew. They released a self-titled album in 2001 and toured extensively. He has also performed with Phil Lesh and Friends and formed John Medeski & The Itch in 2006. In 2016, Medeski co-founded the supergroup Saudade, featuring members from Deftones, Bad Brains, and Cro-Mags. More recently, in 2018, he formed John Medeski’s Mad Skillet and composed the original score for the television series “The Curse” in 2023, demonstrating his continued artistic output and breadth of work across different mediums and collaborations.
