Allison Moorer was born on June 21, 1972, in Mobile, Alabama, and raised in Frankville and Monroeville, Alabama. In 1986, at 14, Moorer and her older sister, Shelby Lynne, experienced a profound family tragedy when their father shot and killed their mother before taking his own life. Following this, she graduated from the University of South Alabama in 1993, moving to Nashville, Tennessee, to join her sister and begin her music career, initially as a background singer in Lynne’s band.
Moorer signed with MCA Nashville in 1997 and released her debut single, “A Soft Place to Fall,” which she co-wrote with Gwil Owen. This song was featured in Robert Redford’s film *The Horse Whisperer* and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song in 1999, leading to her performance at the Oscars. She has released ten albums throughout her career, with her compositions being recorded by artists such as Trisha Yearwood, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Steve Earle, and Hayes Carll. Her career includes collaborations with various labels, including Universal South, Sugar Hill Records, New Line Records, and Rykodisc, consistently producing critically recognized work.
