Ramble Jon Krohn, born on May 27, 1976, in Eugene, Oregon, and raised in Columbus, Ohio, began his musical journey in 1993. Initially focusing on composition and music theory, he shifted his musical direction after discovering the Columbus hip-hop scene in the early 90s. This transition led him away from traditional music education and towards a production style centered on sampling and beat-making. His early creative process involved meticulously chopping and arranging sounds into complex multi-bar loops, aiming to create engaging tracks that sustained interest without relying on lengthy, repetitive segments. This method became foundational to his sound, allowing him to layer intricate sonic textures within a typical three-minute song framework.

RJD2 gained significant recognition in 2002 after signing with El-P’s Definitive Jux label, releasing his debut solo album, “Deadringer.” This album featured tracks like “The Horror” and “Ghostwriter,” which became prominent in the early 2000s hip-hop scene and were later featured in various commercials. Over the years, RJD2 has expanded his discography with multiple critically acclaimed solo albums, including “Since We Last Spoke” (2004), “The Third Hand” (2007), and “The Colossus” (2010), the latter released on his own label, RJ’s Electrical Connections. His music has also been licensed for various media, most notably “A Beautiful Mine” for the title sequence of “Mad Men.” He has collaborated extensively, forming groups like Soul Position with Blueprint, MHz Legacy, and Icebird with Aaron Livingston, demonstrating his versatility across different musical projects.

Throughout his career, RJD2 has maintained an independent ethos, prioritizing creative satisfaction over commercial aspirations. He established his own record label, RJ’s Electrical Connections, to release much of his solo work and collaborations. Key milestones include his work with rapper Aceyalone on “Magnificent City” (2006) and a collaborative album with STS titled “STS x RJD2” (2015). He continues to evolve his craft, focusing on incremental improvements in drumming, composition, and audio arrangement. His approach emphasizes a “building block” methodology for sound, treating chunks of chords and samples as tangible elements to construct his unique sonic landscapes. RJD2 also ventured into music education, releasing a course on sampling and arranging with Soundfly in 2021, sharing his expertise with aspiring producers.
