Amaarae is the stage name of Ama Serwah Genfi, the incredibly talented singer, songwriter, producer, and engineer. With lyrical dexterity, a unique voice and exceptional style, she is also known for her work around representation of gender and race in music. After collaborating with artists such as AYLØ, Kay-Ara, Yaw P and releasing a few singles, she unleashed her debut 6 track EP, Passionfruit Summers, in 2017.
Born in New York to Ghanaian parents, and raised in Atlanta and Accra in Ghana, Amaarae began to experiment with music as a young teenager. She was making her own mixtapes by 17 and then took up an internship at a music studio where she honed her skills in production. She studied English literature at University in the States and at the same time undertook voice training and concentrated on her song writing skills. She returned to Ghana in 2017, and began to forge a career as a musician. After releasing her debut EP, Passionfruit Summers, later that same year she was named as one of Apple Music Africa’s Favourite New Artists in 2018. She released her debut studio album, The Angel You Don’t Know, in 2020.
Amaarae regularly connects with her legions of followers and fans through TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, posting pictures and videos about her life around music. She has a dedicated YouTube channel, Amaarae, and an official website, amaaraemusic.com.
