Animal Collective is an American experimental pop band known for exploring diverse musical styles and releasing multiple critically acclaimed albums. After establishing their independent record label Paw Tracks in 1999, Animal Collective, featuring Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Geologist (Brian Weitz), and Deakin (Josh Dibb), embarked on an influential career exploring diverse musical styles. Their debut album, ‘Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished,’ released in 2000 under the moniker of Avey Tare and Panda Bear, showcased an early experimental sound. By 2003, the full collective converged for ‘Here Comes the Indian’ (later reissued as ‘Ark’), marking the first project with all four members contributing.
This was followed by ‘Painting With’ in 2016, which continued to push their sonic boundaries. In 2018, they unveiled ‘Tangerine Reef,’ an ambitious audiovisual album that seamlessly blended music and visuals, reinforcing their reputation for innovative and immersive experiences. Each release throughout this period consistently demonstrated their commitment to challenging conventional musical structures and embracing a broad spectrum of influences. Most recently, Animal Collective has maintained their creative momentum with critically acclaimed new works.
In 2022, they released ‘Time Skiffs,’ which garnered strong reviews for its return to their signature soundscapes. This was swiftly followed by ‘Isn’t It Now?’ in 2023, another testament to their enduring artistry and continuous exploration of experimental pop. With a discography that consistently breaks new ground and a reputation for captivating live performances, Animal Collective continues to be a formidable force in independent music, regularly touring and creating.
