Animal Collective

Animal Collective formed in Baltimore County, Maryland, emerging from the childhood friendships of Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Geologist (Brian Weitz), and Deakin (Josh Dibb). Their musical journey began in the 1990s as schoolmates, influenced by progressive schools that fostered creativity. Weitz and Portner initially explored music through covers of Pavement and The Cure, and later experimented with sound collages and psychedelic elements. The group’s early creative process involved recording individual works on cassette tapes and exchanging ideas, eventually leading to a collaborative approach inspired by psychedelic bands like Can and Silver Apples.

The band’s early releases were often under individual or partial member names, with the debut album, “Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished” (2000), released as Avey Tare and Panda Bear. They established their own record label, Paw Tracks, to release their music. The full collective officially formed for their 2003 album, “Here Comes the Indian” (later reissued as “Ark”), which marked the first time all four members contributed to a release. This period saw them move from lo-fi recordings to more structured compositions, while maintaining their experimental essence, incorporating elements like loops, drones, sampling, vocal harmonies, and sound collage.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Animal Collective achieved significant milestones. Their 2007 album, “Strawberry Jam,” was their first to chart on the Billboard 200, and its follow-up, “Merriweather Post Pavilion” (2009), became their most commercially successful, reaching No. 13 on the US chart. This album’s distinctive psychedelic pop sound became highly influential within independent music. The band continued to release albums, including “Centipede Hz” (2012), “Painting With” (2016), “Tangerine Reef” (2018), “Time Skiffs” (2022), and “Isn’t It Now?” (2023), consistently demonstrating their eclectic and evolving artistic approach. They also ventured into visual projects, such as the film “Oddsac” (2010) and the audiovisual album “Tangerine Reef.”
