Animotion is a renowned American synth-pop band that emerged from Los Angeles in 1983, captivating audiences with their infectious melodies and dynamic performances. The band was formed by former members of the retro science-fiction band Red Zone, alongside vocalist Bill Wadhams. Their debut album, released in 1984, featured the hit single “Obsession,” which soared to the Top Ten of the US Billboard Hot 100, establishing Animotion as a formidable force in the music industry. This initial success was complemented by the follow-up single “Let Him Go,” further solidifying their presence in the pop music scene.
In 1986, Animotion released their second album, “Strange Behavior,” which showcased their evolving sound and included the international hit “I Engineer.” This track, co-written by Holly Knight, resonated particularly well in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and South Africa, where it reached the Top 20. The band toured extensively during this period, sharing stages with iconic acts such as Phil Collins and Depeche Mode, which helped to expand their fan base and enhance their reputation.
Despite facing significant lineup changes in the late 1980s, Animotion continued to innovate and adapt. The introduction of new members, including Cynthia Rhodes and Paul Engemann, led to the release of their self-titled album, which featured the popular single “Room to Move.” This track gained additional exposure through its inclusion in the film “My Stepmother Is an Alien,” showcasing the band’s ability to remain relevant in a changing musical landscape.
After a hiatus, Animotion reunited in 2001, bringing together original members for live performances that delighted long-time fans. Their 2016 album “Raise” marked a triumphant return, featuring both classic hits and new material, demonstrating their enduring appeal and commitment to their craft. With a legacy of memorable music and a dedicated fan base, Animotion continues to thrive, proving their status as a beloved icon in the synth-pop genre.
