About

Ahmed Jahanzeb Usmani, born in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, is a notable Pakistani pop singer and composer. He adopted the stage name AJ and was known as “The Wonder Boy” after releasing his first record at the age of 8. Jahanzeb’s musical foundation is rooted in classical training, having been a pupil (shagird) of Ustad Rais Khan since a Rasm-e-Gandha Bandhi ceremony in 1988 at the Sheraton Hotel. This classical background influences his style, leading him to primarily perform emotive, slow-tempo songs. His early childhood showed musical talent; he began singing at age four and made public appearances, including at the Laurel Neelaam exhibition, a popular Pakistani TV show.

Jahanzeb’s career saw significant milestones, including a successful tour of South Africa in the early 1990s, where he performed 50 charity concerts. In 1996, he performed for high-ranking officers at the National Defence College of the Pakistan Army. His single “Eks Bar Kaho” in 2000 achieved substantial commercial success, selling nearly half a million copies and staying at the top of the charts for 20 weeks. This was followed by the impact of “Tu Jo Nahin.” His album “Parastish” (2003) became a best-seller, recognized by the BBC as the most popular album in South Asia. He has performed in over 2000 shows globally, often sharing the stage with prominent artists such as AR Rahman, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Ali Azmat. He is notable for his commitment to live vocal performances, choosing not to lip-sync.

In 2007, Jahanzeb contributed to the revival of the Pakistani film industry by performing four songs for Shoaib Mansoor’s film “Khuda Kay Liye,” with the soundtrack becoming a record-setter for sales. His involvement in the film “Bol” (2010), also by Shoaib Mansoor, further solidified his presence in Pakistani cinema. He made his Coke Studio (Pakistan) debut in 2016 and contributed to further seasons. Beyond performing, Jahanzeb operates Urban Sound Factory, a professional audio recording studio, and has composed numerous Original Soundtracks (OSTs) for television dramas, telefilms, and documentaries. His consistent work across various musical and visual media has established him as a significant figure in Pakistani entertainment.
