Art Alexakis was born on April 12, 1962, in Los Angeles, California. His early life was marked by personal challenges, including financial difficulties and trauma, which later influenced his songwriting. He experienced significant losses, including the death of his brother and girlfriend, and struggled with substance abuse, which he overcame in June 1989. These experiences provided depth and authenticity to his artistic expression. Alexakis attended Santa Monica High School and took film classes at Los Angeles Community College, broadening his creative interests beyond music.
His music career began in the 1980s in Los Angeles with Shakin’ Brave. After relocating to San Francisco, he formed the cowpunk band The Easy Hoes, releasing “Tragic Songs of Life” in 1989. His next project, Colorfinger, released “Deep in the Heart of the Beast in the Sun” and an EP, “Demonstration.” Several songs from Colorfinger were later adapted for Everclear. Upon moving to Portland, Alexakis founded Everclear, which gained significant recognition in the alternative rock scene. The band achieved three platinum albums: “Sparkle & Fade,” “So Much for the Afterglow,” and “Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile,” establishing Alexakis as a prominent figure in rock music.
Beyond his band work, Alexakis has held various roles within the music industry. He served as an A&R representative for Capitol Records and founded his own label, Popularity Recordings, in the early 2000s, producing albums like Flipp’s “Volume.” He has also composed music for films such as “Antitrust” (2001), “Blast from the Past” (1999), and “40 Days and 40 Nights” (2002). His acting credits include “Committed” (2000), “Wild” (2014), and a recurring role as Mr. Gibson in “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide” (2006). A long-standing advocate, Alexakis has engaged in political activism, testifying before Congress for child support enforcement in 2000, serving as a delegate for the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and publicly supporting LGBTQ+ rights.
