Rakim Athelston Mayers, known professionally as ASAP Rocky, was born on October 3, 1988, in Harlem, Manhattan. His early life was shaped by significant personal challenges; his father was incarcerated when Mayers was 12 and passed away in 2012, and his older brother was killed when Mayers was 13. These events led him to pursue rapping seriously, having started at age eight and learning from his older brother. He grew up admiring Harlem-based rap group the Diplomats and was also influenced by Mobb Deep, Three 6 Mafia, UGK, Run DMC, Wu-Tang Clan, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. His experiences with homelessness during his teenage years further contributed to his artistic perspective.
Mayers joined the A$AP Mob collective in 2007, a group of artists who shared interests in music and fashion. He gained significant traction in 2011 with the release of his single “Purple Swag” and later “Peso,” which received radio airplay. This success led to a record deal with Polo Grounds Music, RCA Records, and Sony Music Entertainment, under which he released his debut mixtape, “Live. Love. A$AP,” to critical acclaim. His debut studio album, “Long. Live. A$AP” (2013), debuted atop the Billboard 200 and achieved double platinum certification. He continued this success with his second album, “At. Long. Last. A$AP” (2015), which also topped the charts and earned critical praise. His third album, “Testing” (2018), debuted within the Billboard 200’s top five.
Beyond music, Mayers has diversified his career into acting, fashion design, and modeling. He made appearances in films such as “Dope” (2015) and “Zoolander 2” (2016). He founded the creative agency AWGE and has collaborated with numerous high-profile brands. His work in music video direction and production for other artists, often under the pseudonym Lord Flacko, showcases his versatility. He has garnered multiple awards and nominations, including a BET Award and two BET Hip Hop Awards, reflecting his impact across various creative industries.
