Babasonicos was formed in the early 1990s in Buenos Aires, Argentina, emerging alongside other notable bands in the Argentine New Rock wave. The band, whose name references both the Indian guru Sai Baba and a local toy gun called “La Pistola Sónica,” was founded by lead singer Adrián “Dárgelos” Rodríguez and keyboardist Diego “Uma-T” Tuñón with the intention of creating a distinct musical style that diverged from established Argentine music. The official members also included Diego “Uma” Rodríguez (guitarist and lead singer), Diego “Panza” Castellano (drummer), Mariano “Roger” Domínguez (guitarist), and Gabriel “Gabo” Manelli (bassist).
The band’s career progressed with the release of their second album, “Trance Zomba,” in 1994, which saw the incorporation of DJ “DJ Peggyn” into the lineup until 1999. A significant milestone occurred in 1999 when they collaborated with Ian Brown on a song for his album “Golden Greats.” The early 2000s marked a period of critical and commercial success, beginning with their 2001 album “Jessico.” This album brought the band mainstream attention with singles such as “Los Calientes,” “El Loco,” and “Deléctrico,” and was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award in 2002 for Best Rock Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Subsequent albums, “Infame” (2003), “Anoche” (2005), and “Mucho” (2008), further solidified their reputation, each receiving critical acclaim and commercial success, often being cited as among the best Argentine albums of their respective release years.
In 2003, Babasonicos composed the soundtrack for Vera Fogwill’s film “Las Mantenidas Sin Sueños” (Kept and Dreamless), which was released in 2007. A challenging period for the band was the passing of their bassist, Gabriel Manelli, on January 12, 2008, due to Hodgkin’s disease. Multi-instrumentalist Carca joined the group in his place for their 2011 album, “A Propósito.” Babasonicos continued to record and perform, releasing “Romantisísmico” in 2013, which earned them a Latin Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2014, and their latest album, “Trinchera,” in 2022. The band has consistently innovated and maintained relevance in Latin rock.
