About

David Russell Gordon Davies was born on February 3, 1947, in Fortis Green, London. He was the youngest of eight children, immersing himself in diverse musical styles, from music hall to jazz and early rock and roll. Alongside his elder brother Ray Davies and friend Pete Quaife, Dave developed his guitar skills, experimenting with sound in their family home. This early period of experimentation was crucial, leading to the development of his distinctive guitar style. In 1963, Dave, along with Pete Quaife, officially founded The Kinks, with Ray Davies joining shortly after, solidifying the classic lineup alongside drummer Mick Avory.

Dave Davies is credited with an innovative electric guitar technique that had a significant impact on music history. In 1964, prior to recording “You Really Got Me,” he famously used a razor blade to slice the speaker cone of his Elpico amplifier to create a distorted sound. This groundbreaking technique was one of the first widespread uses of distortion in mainstream music and laid foundational groundwork for genres such as heavy metal and punk rock. “You Really Got Me” became a chart-topping hit in the UK and reached number 7 in the US, establishing The Kinks’ sound. Davies contributed to The Kinks’ extensive discography, occasionally taking on lead vocal and songwriting duties for tracks such as “Death of a Clown,” “Party Line,” and “Strangers.” He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 as a member of The Kinks.

Throughout his career, Dave Davies has also maintained a solo career, releasing his first solo single, “Death of a Clown,” in 1967, which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart. Although an intended solo album, nicknamed “A Hole in the Sock Of,” was never officially released at the time, its tracks were later compiled. He continued to release solo albums such as “AFL1-3603” (1980), “Glamour” (1981), and “Chosen People” (1983). Following a stroke in 2004, Dave recovered and continued his musical pursuits, releasing new studio albums like “Fractured Mindz” (2007) and “I Will Be Me” (2013). In 2015, he reunited with his brother Ray Davies onstage for the first time in nearly two decades to perform “You Really Got Me.”
