About

Colin Stetson was born on March 3, 1975, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He began playing the saxophone at age 10 and by high school, he was proficient on soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, in addition to clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute. Stetson received a scholarship to attend the University of Michigan School of Music, where he joined the Creative Arts Orchestra, an improvisational new-music collective, even before officially matriculating. During his university years, he co-founded the band Transmission, exploring funk, free jazz, and rock. After graduating in 1997, Stetson relocated to the Bay Area with Transmission, which evolved into a saxophone-bass-drums trio and released their album “Tiny Beast” in 2002. This period established Stetson’s ability to create rich, atmospheric soundscapes with a minimalist setup.

Stetson’s career gained momentum through his collaborations with established artists. In 2007, he joined Arcade Fire as a touring and recording member, contributing to their critically acclaimed album “Neon Bible” and later “The Suburbs” (2010) and “Reflektor” (2013). The following year, he started collaborating with Bon Iver, contributing to “Bon Iver, Bon Iver” (2011) and “22, A Million” (2016). His distinctive instrumental work, characterized by advanced circular breathing, multiphonics, and percussive key work, caught the attention of film composers. Since 2013, Stetson has composed scores for numerous films and television series, including “Blue Caprice” (2013), “Hereditary” (2018), and “The Menu” (2022). His solo work includes the “New History Warfare” series, with “Vol. 2: Judges” (2011) and “Vol. 3: To See More Light” (2013) both receiving Polaris Music Prize nominations. He continued to release solo projects such as “Sorrow: A Reimagining of Górecki’s 3rd Symphony” (2016) and “All This I Do for Glory” (2017).

His unique approach to the saxophone has solidified his reputation as an innovative musician. In 2011, he was selected by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival. He also contributed to the score for the video game “Red Dead Redemption 2” in 2018. His recent works include “Chimæra I” (2022), “When We Were That What Wept for the Sea” (2023), and “The Love It Took to Leave You” (2024), demonstrating his ongoing artistic evolution. Stetson’s blend of technical virtuosity and genre-spanning collaborations has made him a respected figure in contemporary music and film scoring.
