Afie Jurvanen, performing under the moniker Bahamas, was born on April 28, 1981, in Toronto and grew up in Barrie, Ontario. Jurvanen, who is fluent in Finnish and holds a Finnish passport, taught himself guitar, laying the foundation for his musical career. Early in his career, he collaborated with a diverse range of musicians, including The Lumineers, Feist, Jack Johnson, and City and Colour. These collaborations provided him with valuable experience and exposure before he launched his solo project.
His debut album, “Pink Strat,” was recorded in a rural Ontario cabin in 2008 and released in 2009. This album earned him a nomination for a 2010 Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Solo, marking his initial recognition in the Canadian music scene. This was followed by “Barchords” in 2012, which secured a nomination for Adult Alternative Album of the Year at the 2013 Juno Awards, where Jurvanen also received a Songwriter of the Year nomination for tracks like “Be My Witness,” “Caught Me Thinking,” and “Lost in the Light.”
Jurvanen’s career continued to ascend with “Bahamas Is Afie,” released in 2014, which not only topped Q’s Top 20 Albums of 2014 but also earned him two Juno Awards in 2015 for Adult Alternative Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. He consistently toured and released new music, including “Earthtones” in 2018 and “Sad Hunk” in 2020, with the latter winning the Juno Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year in 2021. His sixth studio album, “Bootcut,” was released in 2023, and he has announced an upcoming album, “My Second Last Album,” for release in October 2025.
