Barenaked Ladies (BNL) originated in 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario, founded by Ed Robertson and Steven Page. Their early performances, characterized by comedic banter and improvised sets, quickly garnered a local following in Canada. In 1991, their self-titled cassette became the first independent release to achieve gold certification in the country. Following a 1992 signing with Reprise Records, BNL released their debut album, “Gordon,” which included popular singles such as “If I Had $1000000” and “Brian Wilson.” The album’s success in Canada set the stage for broader recognition.
The band’s popularity expanded to the United States with their 1996 live album, “Rock Spectacle,” which exposed American audiences to tracks like “Brian Wilson” and “The Old Apartment.” Their fourth studio album, “Stunt,” released in 1998, marked a significant milestone, featuring their highest-charting hit, “One Week,” which spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Stunt” reached number three on the Billboard 200 and number nine in Canada. The album also included singles “It’s All Been Done” and “Call and Answer.” Their fifth album, “Maroon” (2000), and its lead single “Pinch Me” also performed well on the charts, further solidifying their commercial success.
Over their career, Barenaked Ladies have released 18 studio albums and have sold over 15 million albums and singles. They are recognized for creating and performing the theme song for the American sitcom “The Big Bang Theory.” The band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in March 2018, acknowledging their contributions to music. Since Steven Page’s departure in 2009, the band has continued to tour and record as a quartet, embracing new creative approaches while maintaining their signature style, as evidenced by recent albums such as “Detour de Force” (2021) and “In Flight” (2023).
