Drivin N Cryin moved to Geffen Records in 1994 after their tenure with Island Records. They released one album, “Wrapped in Sky,” under this label, which featured new keyboard sounds and reflected a return to their original musical style.

Drivin N Cryin formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1985, shortly after Kevn Kinney moved to the city from Milwaukee. Kinney, then working at a sewage treatment plant, began collaborating with Frank French at Dragon Path Music, leading to the creation of original songs. The band’s name, Drivin N Cryin, was inspired by Kinney’s diverse musical compositions. Kinney soon joined forces with Tim Nielsen, a member of the band The Nightporters. The band quickly gained recognition in Atlanta’s club scene, leading to a contract with 688 Records. After the release of their first album, “Scarred But Smarter,” they secured a deal with Island Records.
In 1987, Frank French and Paul Lenz departed, with Jeff Sullivan joining as the new drummer. Buren Fowler, R.E.M.’s guitar tech, also began making on-stage appearances with the band and officially joined in 1988. Their major-label debut, “Whisper Tames the Lion,” released in 1988, reached No. 130 on the Billboard 200, achieving college radio success with tracks like “Can’t Promise You The World” and “Powerhouse.” “Mystery Road” followed in 1989, featuring live staples such as “From the Word Go” (a.k.a “Honeysuckle Blue”) and “Straight To Hell.” In 1991, “Fly Me Courageous” became their most commercially successful album, earning a gold certification. The band continued to tour extensively, opening for artists like Neil Young and Soul Asylum.
The mid-1990s saw shifts in the band’s lineup and record labels. In 1993, they released “Smoke,” which peaked at No. 95 on the Billboard 200. Guitarist Buren Fowler was replaced by keyboardist Joey Huffman in 1994, and the band moved to Geffen Records. Their 1995 album, “Wrapped in Sky,” showcased new keyboard sounds and a return to their earlier musical style. Drivin N Cryin continued to release albums, including a self-titled album in 1997 and a live album, “The Essential Live Drivin’ ‘N’ Cryin’,” in 1999. In 2015, Drivin N Cryin was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, recognizing their sustained contributions to music.
