Beharie, whose full name is Christian Beharie, grew up in a musical household in Norway, surrounded by instruments and keen singers. His family actively participated in choirs, fostering an early connection to music. This environment led him to spend much of his childhood developing his vocal abilities. After moving to Oslo at the age of 20 to pursue formal music education in performance arts, Beharie began to develop his professional career. He formed a band with classmates, which evolved into his solo project, Beharie. His background includes training in classical music while also being influenced by soul and electronic genres, which shaped his distinctive musical style.
His career progression has been marked by a consistent development of his sound and artistry. Beharie released three EPs prior to his debut album, consistently expanding his musical range. In October 2023, he released his debut album, ‘Are You There, Boy?’, which garnered critical attention. This album showcases his indie-soul expression combined with a singer-songwriter lyrical style, exploring personal themes of identity, loneliness, and queer love. The album was created through an uninhibited process, allowing narratives to emerge organically. He has been recognized for his vulnerable vocal delivery and delicate harmonies, drawing comparisons to artists such as Frank Ocean, Moses Sumney, and Leon Bridges. Beharie’s work has been supported by platforms like COLORS Berlin, Under The Radar, Mahogany, CLASH, and Earmilk.
Beharie has also made significant live performance achievements. He has supported established artists like William Fitzsimmons on a month-long European tour, and Norwegian artist Thomas Dybdahl, even featuring on Dybdahl’s single ‘River’. He has performed at prestigious festivals including the Montreux Jazz Festival twice and Øyafestivalen, and played at the opening ceremony of Norway’s National Museum. His recent A COLORS SHOW performance of ‘Adore’ followed his debut album, further cementing his presence in the music scene. Beharie continues to prioritize artistic growth and curiosity, aiming to continuously evolve as a musician and songwriter.
