Alpha Diallo, known professionally as Black M, was born on December 27, 1984, in Paris, France. Of Guinean descent, he grew up in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. His stage name, Black Mesrimes (later shortened to Black M), is a portmanteau referencing the French criminal Jacques Mesrine, and the words ‘rhymes’ and ‘black,’ reflecting his heritage. He began his career as a member of the influential French hip-hop group Sexion d’Assaut. With Sexion d’Assaut, Black M contributed to several successful projects, including two studio albums, “L’École des points vitaux” (2010), and “L’Apogée” (2012), which solidified the group’s presence in the French music scene. During his time with the group, he was recognized for his technical rapping skills alongside fellow members Gims and Lefa.
In 2014, Black M embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album, “Les yeux plus gros que le monde.” This album quickly achieved diamond certification, selling 530,000 copies, and launched him into significant solo success. A key track from this album, “Sur ma route,” reached number 1 in sales in France and was certified platinum. The album’s re-release as “Le Monde plus gros que mes yeux” further extended its reach. He also engaged in various projects outside his album releases, including contributing to the soundtrack for the film “The New Adventures of Aladdin” and appearing on the compilation “Touche pas à ma zik.”
Black M continued to build his solo discography with “Éternel insatisfait” (2016), which was followed by the “Éternel Big Black Tour” between April and December 2017. He joined the troupe Les Enfoirés in 2016, showcasing his versatility beyond rap. His third studio album, “Il était une fois…” (2019), and his fourth, “Alpha” (2021), further demonstrated his artistic evolution. Beyond music, Black M announced plans to venture into cinema with an autobiographical film in 2017. He has also actively participated in the educational song competition “Manie Musicale,” winning in 2017 with “Sur ma route” and in 2018 with “Je suis chez moi.” These achievements highlight his consistent impact and enduring popularity in the French entertainment industry.
