Bon Iver

Bon Iver, an American indie folk band, has garnered critical acclaim and Grammy Awards for their distinctive sound and evolving musical approach. After independently releasing their critically acclaimed debut album ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ in July 2007, Bon Iver, led by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon, quickly garnered significant industry attention. The foundational recordings for this album, made during a three-month creative period in a western Wisconsin cabin, introduced the band’s distinctive sound. Following its independent release, Bon Iver signed with Jagjaguwar in 2007, leading to a UK and European release via 4AD in 2008.

The band’s experimental trajectory continued with their third album, ’22, A Million,’ released in 2016, which received critical acclaim for its stylistic evolution. Their fourth album, ‘I, I,’ released in 2019, further solidified their artistic standing and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Throughout this period, Bon Iver’s influence grew through collaborations with prominent artists, including Kanye West on ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ in 2010 and contributions like ‘Heavenly Father’ to the ‘Wish I Was Here’ soundtrack in 2014. The band also made a notable return to live performances, playing their first show in almost three years at the Eaux Claires Music Festival in 2015.

Their unique approach, incorporating diverse instrumentation such as bass saxophones and meticulous sound design, has solidified their reputation in contemporary music. The band also contributes to various charitable initiatives, including designing a T-shirt for the Yellow Bird Project benefitting a Toronto women’s shelter and contributing to AIDS benefit albums. In 2024, the band publicly endorsed Kamala Harris, performing at a rally. Bon Iver’s significant cultural contributions and successful performances are further recognized with a star on the outside mural of Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue.
