Bon Iver was founded in 2006 by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Initially a solo endeavor, the project evolved into a band, featuring Justin Vernon on vocals and guitar, Sean Carey on drums, keyboards, and vocals, Michael Lewis on vocals, baritone guitar, guitar, violin, and saxophone, Matthew McCaughan on drums, bass, and vocals, Andrew Fitzpatrick on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, and Jenn Wasner on guitar, keyboards, and vocals. Vernon released Bon Iver’s debut album, “For Emma, Forever Ago,” independently in July 2007. The foundational recordings for this album were largely made during a three-month period of isolation in a cabin in western Wisconsin, marking a significant early phase of the band’s creative process.
In 2012, Bon Iver received the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album for their eponymous album, “Bon Iver.” This album, released in 2011, showcased an ambitious musical departure from their debut, incorporating more instruments and a broader sound palette. Their third album, “22, A Million,” released in 2016, continued this experimental trajectory and was met with critical acclaim that likened its stylistic shift to established acts like Radiohead. The fourth album, “I, I,” released in 2019, received a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2020 Grammy Awards. The band’s musical journey has seen them collaborate with prominent artists such as Kanye West and Taylor Swift, expanding their reach and influence within the music industry. Their most recent album, “Sable, Fable,” was released in 2025, with an accompanying EP, “Sable,” released in October 2024, signaling a return to a more stripped-back, indie folk sound.
Bon Iver’s career has been characterized by consistent album releases and extensive touring, headlining major festivals like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Glastonbury, and Coachella. Their unique approach to songwriting and production, including the integration of diverse instrumentation such as bass saxophones and pedal steel guitars, and their meticulous sound design in live shows, has established them as a notable presence in contemporary music. They have also engaged in various charitable initiatives, such as designing a T-shirt for the Yellow Bird Project to benefit a women’s shelter in Toronto, and contributing to AIDS benefit albums. The band holds a star on the outside mural of Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue, acknowledging their significant contribution to the local culture and successful performances.
