Bonnie Leigh McKee was born on January 20, 1984, in Vacaville, California, and raised in Seattle. Her musical journey began early, studying classical piano and joining the Seattle Girls Choir Prime Voci at age 12, touring internationally and recording two albums with the group. At 16, McKee signed with Warner Music Group Reprise Records in a significant deal for a new artist. Her debut album, “Trouble,” released in 2004, was critically acclaimed by publications such as Blender, Nylon, The Los Angeles Times, and Teen People, but did not achieve commercial success. Following this, she took a hiatus from her artist career to focus on songwriting.
After facing career setbacks and personal challenges, McKee established herself as a professional songwriter. She signed with Prescription Songs in 2009 and began collaborating with artists like Katy Perry. This collaboration proved highly fruitful, leading to numerous chart-topping singles. Her work includes co-writing “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Part of Me,” “Wide Awake,” and “Roar” for Katy Perry. These songs collectively sold over 30 million copies worldwide and earned McKee multiple BMI Pop Awards. She also co-wrote Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me,” Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite,” Rita Ora’s “How We Do (Party),” and Cheryl’s “I Don’t Care,” all of which achieved number one status in either the US or UK charts.
In 2013, McKee re-emerged as an artist with the single “American Girl” under Epic Records. She consistently released new music, including the EP “Bombastic” in 2015, and continued songwriting for other artists such as Cher, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Lambert. After a decade of anticipation, McKee independently released “Hot City” in 2024, a re-recorded version of her second album that was initially canceled in 2014. The re-release was met with positive reviews and demonstrated her sustained artistic vision and connection with her fanbase, further solidifying her reputation as both a hit songwriter and an independent recording artist.
