Bonny Light Horseman

Bonny Light Horseman is an American folk trio composed of three seasoned songwriters and multi-instrumentalists: Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson, and Josh Kaufman. Mitchell is widely known for her work as a singer-songwriter and for creating the musical Hadestown, while Johnson fronts the band Fruit Bats and has played with The Shins. Kaufman is a respected producer and guitarist whose credits include collaborations with The National, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Josh Ritter. Together, the three musicians blend their distinct voices and instrumental talents into a collaborative songwriting project rooted in folk tradition.

The group first came together in 2018, making their live debut at that year’s edition of the Eaux Claires music festival, an event founded by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. Following the warm reception of their early performances, the trio settled in to record, capturing the chemistry they had developed on stage. Their debut album, released in early 2020, earned critical praise and a Grammy Award nomination, establishing the band as a notable presence in contemporary folk music.

In June 2024, Bonny Light Horseman released their third album, Keep Me On Your Mind/See You Free, extending a creative run that began just a few years earlier. The record continued to present the trio’s rich harmonies and collective songwriting, building on the momentum of their previous releases and their growing reputation as one of the most compelling ensembles in modern American folk.
