Vijay Iyer is a celebrated composer, pianist, bandleader, and educator, recognized for his innovative contributions to contemporary music and his deep academic approach to his craft. After completing his Ph.D. in technology and the arts with a specialization in music cognition from UC Berkeley in 1998, Vijay Iyer went on to premiere ‘In What Language?’ in 2003, the same year he received the prestigious Alpert Award in the Arts. His doctoral dissertation, ‘Microstructures of Feel, Macrostructures of Sound: Embodied Cognition in West African and African-American Musics,’ demonstrated a scholarly depth that informs his innovative music.
He released ‘Holding It Down: The Veterans’ Dreams Project’ in 2013. His academic prowess led to his 2014 appointment as the Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts at Harvard University, alongside a United States Artists Fellowship.
