Celisse Allegra Henderson was born in Oakland, California, and spent her childhood across various cities in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Suisun City, Antioch, and San Francisco. Her artistic upbringing was influenced by her parents; her father taught voice and gospel music at the University of California, Berkeley, and later chaired the music department at Los Medanos College, while her mother directed a high school choir, jazz band, and orchestra. Raised in a conservative Christian household, Henderson’s early musical exposure was primarily to gospel and classical music, along with recordings of Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand. She credits artists like Whitney Houston, Crystal Lewis, Joni Mitchell, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe as significant musical influences. Henderson has consistently advocated for diversity and representation within the music industry.
Henderson commenced her professional career in musical theatre. At 18, she appeared in the San Francisco revue “Beach Blanket Babylon.” Her Off-Broadway credits include “In Transit,” and she performed in “Jerry Springer: The Opera” at Carnegie Hall and Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass” with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. She was also part of the first national tour of “Wicked.” Her Broadway debut occurred in 2011 with the revival of “Godspell.” Beyond the stage, Henderson has appeared in several television productions, including “The Electric Company,” “30 Rock,” “Rescue Me,” “White Collar,” “The Big C,” and “Are We There Yet?”
As a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Henderson has performed at notable venues such as the Beacon Theatre, Madison Square Garden, and the Apollo Theater. She has collaborated with a range of artists, including Patti Austin, Melissa Etheridge, Trey Anastasio, Mariah Carey, Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, Dave Matthews Band, John Legend, John Mayer, and Jon Batiste. In 2023, she collaborated with Catapult Opera to produce an opera and short film, “When All I Knew Changed,” informed by her experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also appeared on the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and performed with Lizzo on “Saturday Night Live.”
