Cheer Chen

Cheer Chen, born Chen Chi-chen on June 6, 1975, in Taipei, Taiwan, began her musical journey at an early age with her mother’s support. She attended Taipei Municipal Jingmei Girls’ Senior High School and later National Chengchi University, where she earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree. Her early involvement in music included being a singer and guitarist in an underground band called Sunscreen in the 1990s. Her talent was recognized by Taiwanese rock musician Wu Bai, leading to her signing with Rock Records in 1997. Her debut album, “Think Twice,” was released in July 1998 while she was still an undergraduate.

Chen’s career is marked by independent artistic control and consistent output. After leaving Rock Records in 2003, she independently released her subsequent records. Her 2002 album, “Groupies,” was recognized as one of the 200 best albums of all time by the Taiwanese Musician Institute. Her work “Peripeteia” in 2006 received critical acclaim, winning the Best Music Album Producer Award and Best Music Video Award at the 17th Golden Melody Awards, where she also received nominations for Best Female Singer and Best Album of the Year. In 2009, her fifth album, “Immortal,” recorded in her bedroom, earned a spot on the Top 10 Selling Mandarin Albums of the Year at the IFPI Hong Kong Album Sales Awards. She has been a spokesperson for various brands, including Nikon and Sokenbicha, and participated in an Adidas commercial alongside international celebrities. In 2012, she formed an electronic/experimental music project called The Verse. Her most recent album, “Sofa Sea,” was released in 2018.
