Colter Wall was born on June 27, 1995, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Brad Wall, former Premier of Saskatchewan. He began learning guitar at thirteen, initially focusing on rock bands before transitioning to blues and folk music. His interest in songwriting was sparked around age 15 or 16 after hearing Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.”
In 2015, while a student at the University of Saskatchewan, Wall recorded and released his seven-song EP, “Imaginary Appalachia,” produced by Jason Plumb. This EP gained wider recognition when professional wrestler Brock Lesnar mentioned Wall as a favorite artist, and songs from the EP, particularly “Sleeping on the Blacktop,” were featured in the television show “Dog the Bounty Hunter” and films such as “Hell or High Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” “Sleeping on the Blacktop” accumulated over a million streams on Spotify and also appeared in the Netflix series “The Peripheral” in 2022 and “Kaos” in 2024.
Wall’s career progressed with his signing to Rick Rubin’s American Songs publishing company. His self-titled debut album, produced by Dave Cobb, was released in May 2017. He followed this with “Songs of the Plains” in October 2018 and “Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs” in August 2020. His latest album, “Little Songs,” was released in July 2023. Five of his singles and his “Imaginary Appalachia” EP have achieved Gold certification from the RIAA, with “Sleeping on the Blacktop” reaching Platinum status. His music has also been prominently featured in the “Yellowstone” series, including the songs “Cowpoke,” “Plain to See Plainsman,” and “Caroline.”
