About

Howard Earl Bailey Jr., known as Chingy, born on March 9, 1980, in St. Louis, Missouri, began his musical journey at an early age. Growing up in Walnut Park, he started writing lyrics at 9 and recording raps by 10. Initially performing as H Thugz, he was part of the St. Louis group Without Warning on 49 Productions, achieving local success with “What’s Poppin Off.” He later adopted the stage name Chingy, a slang term for money, marking a significant step in his developing career. His early exposure to the music industry included touring as an opening act for fellow St. Louis artist Nelly in 2002. This period laid the groundwork for his signing with Ludacris’s Disturbing Tha Peace (DTP) record label, in a joint venture with Capitol Records.

Chingy’s debut album, “Jackpot,” released on July 15, 2003, became a commercial success almost immediately. The album was propelled by the single “Right Thurr,” which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. “Jackpot” also featured hits like “One Call Away” and “Holidae In,” and achieved Platinum certification by the RIAA within a year of its release. His second album, “Powerballin'” (2004), continued his commercial momentum, reaching number ten on the charts and also earning Platinum certification. This album included the single “Balla Baby” and featured collaborations with artists such as R. Kelly and Lil Wayne. His musical contributions extended to other media, with his song “I Do” appearing on the soundtrack for the video game Need for Speed: Underground 2 in 2004.

His career progression continued with “Hoodstar” (2006), which debuted at number eight on the album chart and produced the Hot Rap Tracks chart-topping single “Pullin’ Me Back,” featuring Tyrese Gibson. However, subsequent albums like “Hate It or Love It” (2007) and “Success & Failure” (2010), while featuring notable collaborations, experienced a commercial decline. Chingy diversified his career into acting, appearing in TV series such as “My Wife and Kids” (2005) and “George Lopez” (2005), and films like “Scary Movie 4” (2006). More recently, he has ventured into entrepreneurship with his own cologne line, released in early 2022, and has been involved in discussions and initiatives within the tech and spiritual communities, reflecting a broader interest beyond music. He continues to perform and engage with his audience, maintaining his distinct sound and creative autonomy.
