About

Chromatics formed in Portland, Oregon, in 2001. The initial lineup featured Adam Miller, Devin Welch, Michelle Nolan, and Hannah Blilie, with early recordings characterized by a lo-fi, noisy, and chaotic sound, influenced by punk and art punk. This early period saw the release of their debut album, “Chrome Rats vs. Basement Rutz,” in 2003 on Gold Standard Laboratories. Following numerous lineup changes, Adam Miller remained the sole original member. In 2004, a revamped lineup released “Plaster Hounds.” By 2005, a significant stylistic shift occurred when Ruth Radelet, Johnny Jewel, and Nat Walker joined Miller, transitioning the band towards an electronic, Italo disco-influenced sound.

The band’s definitive lineup, consisting of Ruth Radelet (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Adam Miller (guitar, vocoder), Nat Walker (drums, synthesizer), and Johnny Jewel (producer, multi-instrumentalist), began releasing music on Jewel’s Italians Do It Better label in 2007. Their third album, “Night Drive” (2007), received critical acclaim for its refined pop-dance sound, marking a departure from their earlier noise-rock aesthetic. This album elevated their profile, with tracks licensed for various Hollywood films, television shows, and advertising campaigns. A pivotal moment for the band came in 2011 when their song “Tick of the Clock” was prominently featured in the film “Drive” and later in “Taken 2” (2012).

Chromatics continued to achieve recognition with their fourth album, “Kill for Love,” released in 2012, which Pitchfork named the eighth best album of that year. Songs from “Kill for Love,” including singles like “Kill for Love” and a cover of Neil Young’s “Into the Black,” were featured in numerous television series such as “Bates Motel,” “Gossip Girl,” “Mr. Robot,” and “Twin Peaks.” In 2012, they performed for Karl Lagerfeld at the Chanel Spring Summer fashion show in Paris. The band announced their fifth studio album, “Dear Tommy,” in 2014, but it remained unreleased. Instead, they released “Closer to Grey” in 2019. Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, and Nat Walker ultimately announced the band’s disbandment in August 2021.
