Derek Jones was born in Hartford City, Indiana. After turning 18, he joined the military in 1999, serving in the Navy until 2003. He was stationed in San Diego during his service. Initially a drummer in a punk rock band, Jones shifted his musical focus after his military service. He began playing guitar at age 23 or 24 and eventually moved to Nashville. His time in Nashville included experiencing the city’s community spirit after the 2010 flood.
Jones spent approximately 10 years in Nashville, with four to five of those years touring, writing, and recording with Billy Ray Cyrus. Following this period, he returned to Indiana and continued his full-time music career. He is recognized for his commitment to authenticity in his music, which is often influenced by his military background and personal experiences. His discography includes several EPs and singles, with a focus on storytelling through his lyrics. He prioritizes lyrical clarity to ensure his audience understands the narratives within his songs.
His releases include the single “Everybody’s Somebody,” co-written with James LeBlanc, and the EP “Last of a Dying Breed,” released on March 12th. This EP showcased a diverse range of musical styles and lyrical themes, including “Nature of the Beast,” which addresses addiction, and “Black Cloud.” Jones maintains an active performing schedule, playing at various venues across the United States.
