About

Culture Beat was founded in 1989 in Frankfurt, Germany, by Torsten Fenslau, who collaborated with Jens Zimmermann and Peter Zweier. Fenslau, also a DJ at the nightclub Dorian Gray, aimed to create a distinctive musical project. Their initial single, “Der Erdbeermund,” featured a spoken vocal in German by Jo van Nelsen and reached number 11 on the German singles chart. English and French versions were also released, with the instrumental version gaining traction in the United Kingdom, peaking at number 55. Following this, Culture Beat recruited American rapper Jay Supreme and singer Lana Earl. Their second single, “I Like You,” was a minor success in the Netherlands, while “No Deeper Meaning” achieved greater recognition, reaching number 4 in the Netherlands and number 3 on the Canadian RPM Dance Chart. The group’s debut album, “Horizon,” released in 1991, saw moderate success.

A significant turning point for Culture Beat occurred in 1993 when Tania Evans replaced Lana Earl as the lead singer, and the group adopted a more pronounced Eurodance sound. This era marked their most significant international achievement with the release of “Mr. Vain.” The single topped the charts in 13 countries, including Germany, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and became their first mainstream hit in the United States, reaching number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Mr. Vain” received triple Gold certification in Germany for selling over 750,000 units and also achieved Gold status in several other countries, including the US. Subsequent singles like “Got to Get It” and “Anything” also became widespread European hits. Their second album, “Serenity,” sold over two million copies and earned the ECHO award for ‘Best-selling German Act Abroad’ in 1994, with Torsten Fenslau also receiving the ‘Best Producer of the Year’ award. Tragically, Torsten Fenslau passed away in a car accident on November 6, 1993, at the age of 29. His brother, Frank Fenslau, subsequently took over management of the group.

In 1995, the group released their third album, “Inside Out,” featuring the titular single “Inside Out,” which reached number 5 in Germany and number 32 in the UK. This album was the last to feature both Jay Supreme and Tania Evans. In 1997, Frank Fenslau altered the group’s musical direction towards a more commercial pop sound and replaced Tania with Kim Sanders. Jay Supreme departed shortly thereafter. The 1998 album, “Metamorphosis,” despite reaching number 12 in Germany, had a limited chart presence. Jacky Sangster became the fourth female lead singer in 2001, and their single “Insanity” topped the charts in Israel. A 2003 re-release of “Mr. Vain” reached number 7 in Germany. Culture Beat has continued to perform at various 90s revival events globally with Jacky Sangster and MC 4T.
