Anna Dasha Novotny, known professionally as Dasha, was born on February 27, 2000, in San Luis Obispo, California. Her early exposure to music began at age five with musical theater. By age eight, she had learned guitar and piano, and her father, PJ, helped book her first performances in coffee shops and wineries at ten. Her older brother, Bardo, a guitarist for Beauty School Dropout, contributed to her music production. Dasha released her first song at thirteen, supported by a small recording budget from her father. She attended San Luis Obispo High School, participating in musical productions like “Guys and Dolls” (2016) and “Annie” (2018). She later enrolled at Belmont University, but left during the COVID-19 pandemic to focus on her music career.
Dasha’s career began with independent releases. She released the single “Don’t Mean a Thing” through Famouz Records in April 2020. Later that year, she signed with Quadio Records, a subsidiary of Disruptor Records. This partnership led to the 2021 extended play “$hiny Things,” featuring singles such as “None of My Business” and “21st Birthday.” The years 2021 and 2022 saw Dasha release singles in anticipation of her debut album, “Dirty Blonde,” which was released in 2023. Her musical influences include Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Kacey Musgraves, and Dominic Fike.
A significant turning point came in November 2023 with the release of “Austin,” a country music single that gained viral traction and entered the Billboard charts. The song peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2024. Its success extended globally, reaching the top ten in multiple countries, including Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom. In March 2024, Dasha signed with Warner Records, solidifying her presence in mainstream music. Her second album, “What Happens Now?,” was released in February 2024. Dasha’s live performances include the 2024 CMT Music Awards in Austin, Texas, “Allsång på Skansen” in Sweden (August 2024), and her first award show performance at the 2024 Canadian Country Music Awards in September 2024.
