David Bloom

Dat Phan was born on January 25, 1975, in Saigon, Vietnam. His family immigrated to San Diego, California, where he experienced financial difficulties throughout his childhood. Despite these challenges, Phan pursued his passion for comedy, moving to Los Angeles and often living out of his car while performing at open mic nights. His persistence culminated in 2003 when he won the first season of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” a significant achievement that launched his career and provided a platform for his unique comedic voice. This victory established him as a trailblazer for Asian-American comedians in mainstream entertainment.

Phan’s career trajectory expanded beyond stand-up comedy into acting and production. He has appeared in notable television shows such as “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Tyra Banks Show,” and provided voice-over work for “Family Guy.” His film credits include roles in “Cellular” (2004), “Love Is the Drug” (2006), “The Hungover Games” (2014), and “Kong: Skull Island” (2017). His television appearances also include “Magnum P.I.” (2021), “The OA” (2019), and “Hawaii Five-0” (2019). To further his creative control, Phan established Dat Phan Productions, under which he released the DVD “Dat Phan Live” in 2010 and the CD “You Touch, You Buy” in 2009. He continues to tour globally, sharing his culturally insightful perspective on various topics, including immigrant experiences, racial stereotypes, and family dynamics.

His commitment to authentic storytelling and advocating for Asian-American representation in media has made him an influential figure. Phan has been recognized for his impact, including being featured in The Smithsonian Institution’s exhibition of The Top 10 Most Influential Vietnamese-American Individuals.
