About

The Limeliters trace their origins back to July 1959, when founding members Lou Gottlieb, Alex Hassilev, and Glenn Yarbrough came together in Los Angeles, California. Their initial collaboration began when Gottlieb, an arranger for the Kingston Trio, heard Hassilev and Yarbrough perform a duet. Recognizing their vocal blend, they quickly formed a trio, performing first at The Limelite club in Aspen, Colorado, and then achieving significant recognition at the “hungry i” in San Francisco. This led to their signing with Elektra Records and the release of their self-titled debut album in 1960. Later, with RCA Victor, their live album “Tonight in Person” reached number five on the Billboard album chart, cementing their place in the burgeoning urban folk revival of the early 1960s.

Throughout the 1960s, The Limeliters were known for their blend of smooth harmonies, light political satire, and humor. They released over 25 albums, with notable songs like “A Dollar Down,” “Lonesome Traveler,” and “Wabash Cannonball.” Their commercial success extended to television, where they performed jingles for major brands like Coca-Cola and L&M cigarettes, and made appearances on the TV show Hootenanny. In 1963, they recorded for the John Wayne film “McLintock!” The group faced a challenging moment in 1962 with a plane crash in Provo, Utah, during a tour. After Yarbrough’s departure in 1963 and the expiration of their RCA Victor contract in 1965, the original trio disbanded, with members pursuing individual projects, including Alex Hassilev becoming a successful producer and Lou Gottlieb establishing the Morningstar Commune.

The Limeliters have undergone various configurations over the decades, maintaining their musical legacy. After a hiatus, the original members reunited for yearly tours in the 1970s. The group officially reformed in 1981 with Alex Hassilev and Lou Gottlieb, joined by new members like Red Grammer and John David. Successors like Rick Dougherty, Bill Zorn, Mack Bailey, Andy Corwin, and Daniel Boling continued the tradition. The current lineup, featuring C. Daniel Boling, Steve Brooks, and Andy Corwin, maintains the group’s signature vocal sound and humor, performing coast-to-coast and at festivals, ensuring the continuation of nearly six decades of folk music. Richard S. Ginell’s book, “Makin’ A Joyful Noise The Lives and Times of the (Slightly) Fabulous Limeliters” published in 2024, documents their journey.
