About

Born David Garrett Christian Bongartz on September 4, 1980, in Aachen, West Germany, David Garrett began his musical journey at a remarkably young age. At four, he developed an interest in the violin after his father bought one for his older brother. A year later, he won first prize in a competition. His formal studies began at the Lübeck Conservatoire at age seven. By nine, he debuted at the Festival Kissinger Sommer, and at 12, he started working with Polish violinist Ida Haendel, traveling frequently to London and other European cities for lessons. At 11, Garrett received his first Stradivarius violin, gifted by German president Richard von Weizsäcker after a performance.

Garrett’s professional career progressed rapidly. At 13, he signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, becoming their youngest-ever soloist. That same year, he was offered the use of the famous Stradivarius “San Lorenzo.” In April 1997, at 16, he performed with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta in Delhi and Mumbai for India’s 50th Independence anniversary. He later played with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, leading to an invitation to perform at Expo 2000. Furthering his education, he attended the Juilliard School in New York, studying under Itzhak Perlman and graduating in 2004. During his time at Juilliard, he also worked as a model to support himself.

His career showcases a blend of classical and contemporary music. Garrett’s 2008 album, “Encore,” aimed to engage young people with classical music. He performs with his band, integrating classical sonatas, arrangements, and rock songs. He has released numerous studio albums, including “Rock Symphonies” (2010), “Explosive” (2015), and “Rock Revolution” (2017). In 2013, he played the lead role of Niccolò Paganini in the film “The Devil’s Violinist.” Garrett has received multiple awards, including Echo Classics in 2008 and the Frankfurter Musikpreis in 2017. He also held a Guinness World Record for the World’s Fastest Violinist from 2008 to 2011.
