David Jay Grisman, born March 23, 1945, built his reputation as an American mandolinist with a singular idea: merging bluegrass, folk, and jazz into a sound he calls “dawg music.” That instinct to blend traditions shaped his earliest work and set him apart from players content to stay within a single style.
In the 1970s, Grisman formed the David Grisman Quintet alongside Darol Anger, Joe Carroll, Todd Phillips, and Tony Rice. The group released its eponymous debut in 1977 on Kaleidoscope Records, followed by “Hot Dawg” in 1979 on Horizon Records, the jazz division of A&M Records. When the quintet moved to Warner Bros. Records, the lineup evolved to include Mike Marshall, Mark O’Connor, and Rob Wasserman, with occasional guest appearances by jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli. His 1981 album “Mondo Mando” further documented his instrumental command.
During the 1980s, Grisman founded Acoustic Disc, a record label releasing his own recordings and those of other acoustic musicians, keeping full creative control over his catalog. His partnership with Jerry Garcia produced “Jerry Garcia / David Grisman,” a Grammy-nominated album for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and “The Pizza Tapes,” unrehearsed sessions with Garcia and Tony Rice recorded at Grisman’s studio in 1993 and released on Acoustic Disc in 2000.
In 2023, Grisman was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in Owensboro, Kentucky, a career honor that confirms decades of influence across bluegrass, jazz, and acoustic music.
