Parton began performing as a child, appearing on local radio and television programs in East Tennessee. At age 10, she was featured on *The Cas Walker Show* and by 13, she recorded her first single, “Puppy Love,” on Goldband Records. Her early career saw her sign with Combine Publishing, where she achieved success as a songwriter, penning charting singles for other artists alongside her uncle Bill Owens, even as Monument Records initially resisted her desire to record country music.
After Monument Records relented, Parton’s country career began to flourish with her first solo single, “Dumb Blonde,” reaching number 24 on the country chart in 1967. This led to her debut album, *Hello, I’m Dolly*. A turning point occurred in 1967 when Porter Wagoner invited her to join *The Porter Wagoner Show*, launching a successful duet partnership and securing her a deal with RCA Victor. Their duet “The Last Thing on My Mind” hit the country Top 10 in 1968. By 1970, her solo career gained momentum with “Mule Skinner Blues” reaching number three, followed by her first number-one single, “Joshua,” in 1971. Parton composed over 3,000 songs, including major hits like “Jolene” (1973), “I Will Always Love You” (1974), and “9 to 5” (1980), shaping her legacy across country and pop charts.
